The aging process involves atrophy and decent of facial fat. In some people this leaves a hollowed skeletal appearance particularly noticeable in the cheeks. Fat can be taken from other parts of the body and used to replenish facial fat in the cheeks and lips. Fat grafting can also soften the lower lid-cheek junction and reduce the depth of the nasolabial creases. Facial fat grafting is often performed in conjunction with forehead and face lifs, allowing further facial rejuvenation.

Facial fat grafting can be used to create the illusion of cheekbones and to plump lips.
